What Is Detox Like?
Detox is a 3-to-7-day stay on average inside our safe, comfortable residential treatment center. It is a 100% sober facility, removing you from all temptations as your body detoxifies itself so you can move forward in treatment with a clear head, free of withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Detoxing does not need to be frightening, painful, or anxiety inducing, and at DayBreak, your comfort is our number one priority. Your integrated program will include:
- A clean gender-separated semi-private room with your own TV
- Luxury amenities like yoga, detox massages, clean and healthy food prepared by our drug detox center’s private chef, spa services, and movie theater access
- The option to take medications that will ease discomfort, pain, restlessness, and drug cravings, and keep you safe from dangerous side effects like seizures or high blood pressure that occur when recovering from drug and alcohol abuse
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs for those who need a long-term tapering schedule to quit drugs like opioids or benzodiazepines
- Round-the-clock medical care and oversight by accredited and experienced nurses, nurse practitioners, and medical doctors
- Therapy, counseling, and other emotional and psychiatric substance abuse treatment, along with dual diagnosis treatments for those with co-occurring disorders like anxiety, bipolar disorders, depression, or PTSD
What to Expect During Drug Detox?
Our detox center uses state-of-the-art drug and alcohol addiction treatments, combined with professional and knowledgeable medical and therapeutic care, and traditional holistic methodologies in one integrated treatment plan that aims to not only get you from point A to point B in your drug detox journey, but also to begin healing your body, mind, and spirit in a whole-patient, trauma-informed approach to healing.
Detoxing is more than simply putting down the pipe or the needle. It is a full lifestyle change that takes behavioral treatments, social support, mental health care, and treatment of the underlying causes of addiction, along with relapse prevention and stress reduction techniques.
This is why in our rehab programs during and after drug detox you will have treatments available to you like cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy, dual diagnosis treatment, massage therapy, yoga, educational programs, and other addiction treatment available to you. A comprehensive approach to drug and alcohol detox and rehab will give you the best possible chance of avoiding relapse.
Symptoms of Detox by Drug Type
At DayBreak, we will tailor your detox and addiction treatment program to the type of drug(s) you are recovering from, as well as to your needs as an individual. You have your own physiological and behavioral characteristics, as well as your unique goals and preferences, and we will ensure you feel respected, listened-to, and empowered in your own treatment.
Some symptoms you can expect during drug and alcohol detox include:
Benzos
Quitting benzos (benzodiazepines) often causes anxiety and panic to come back. You may also experience:
- Insomnia
- Fast heart rate
- Sensitivity to sound and light
- Long-term depression
- Shaking
- Seizures
- Drug cravings
It is recommended to use a medication-assisted treatment plan for benzodiazepine detox for a slow taper off the drug, followed by a longer-term inpatient rehab program to help you avoid serious side effects.
Opioids (Heroin)
Like benzos, a medical detox addiction treatment program with a medication-assisted treatment plan and longer rehab program is often needed for heroin detox, methadone detox and other opioid detox. Withdrawal symptoms may include:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- High blood pressure
- Muscle aches
- Bone pain
- Anxiety
- Rapid heart rate
- Severe cravings
Stimulants (Cocaine, Meth etc)
Stimulant addiction is largely psychological, and often requires an integrated mental health treatment plan that puts relapse prevention strategies in place and heals underlying roots of addiction. Common symptoms found in cocaine detox, meth detox, and other stimulant detox withdrawal are:
- Dehydration
- Lethargy
- Muscle pain
- Tremors
- Hallucinations
- Paranoia
- Restlessness
- General malaise
- Strong drug cravings
Bath Salts
‘Bath Salts’ is a street name for two psychoactive stimulant drugs (mephedrone and MDVP) that produce withdrawal symptoms like:
- Insomnia
- Delirium
- Gastric distress
- Brain fog
- Confusion
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Hallucinations
- Strong drug cravings
Because quitting bath salts may cause drug-induced psychosis that results in suicidal behavior or violent tendencies, a stay inside an inpatient drug rehab center is usually recommended.
Marijuana
Daily users of marijuana may experience withdrawal symptoms when they quit cold turkey like:
- Depression
- Decreased appetite
- Nightmares or insomnia
- Irritability
- Anxiety
- General malaise
- Fever
- Chills
- Tremors
- Abdominal pain
DXM/Cough Syrup
Dextromethorphan (DXM) is a stimulant with psychoactive properties, and withdrawal from this drug is unpleasant, with symptoms like:
- Restlessness
- Insomnia
- Muscle and bone pain
- Cold flashes
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Weight loss
- Drug cravings
People quitting this drug may benefit from a rehab center’s medical detox plan.
Ecstasy/Molly/MDMA
These drugs are often used at parties and in clubs, and are purchased on the street, and are often cut with other substances like ketamine, opioids, or amphetamines. This makes each person’s detox symptoms unique. Users quitting these drugs will often experience:
- Depression
- Confusion
- Insomnia
- Paranoia
- Anxiety
- Difficulty concentrating
- Memory and cognitive impairment
- Fatigue
Fentanyl
This opioid drug is very potent and creates severe withdrawal symptoms in many users trying to quit. A long-term medication-assisted detox and rehab program is usually required. The relapse rate is significant with opioids, so the longer spent in rehab, the better. Withdrawal symptoms include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Bone and muscle pain
- Restlessness
- Intense drug cravings
Hallucinogens
There has not been enough research done on all hallucinogenic drugs to know the complete effects they take on the body and mind, but it is known that drugs like PCP and ketamine will produce withdrawal symptoms like:
- Headaches
- Rapid heart rate
- Sweating
- Stiff muscles
- Depressed breathing
- Convulsions
- Drug cravings
Oxycodone
This prescription painkiller is another opioid drug that can produce serious withdrawal symptoms like:
- Insomnia
- Muscle aches
- Flu-like symptoms
- High blood pressure
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Strong drug cravings
A longer stay in residential inpatient detox and rehab is recommended when quitting oxycodone and other painkiller prescriptions, followed by outpatient rehab and a long-term connection to peer support groups, recovery meetings, and a strong sober network with support from friends and family.
Prescription Drugs
There are several types of addictive prescription drugs, with the most common being opioids and benzodiazepine drugs. Symptoms vary depending on which prescription drugs you are abusing, how long you have been taking them, how you have been misusing them, and whether you were mixing them with alcohol or other drugs. If you have been drinking and need Xanax detox, for example, your program will be different than if you were misusing prescription painkillers.
Acute Detox
Acute detox is a full-time, personalized residential program with 24-hour medical treatment, in which you move inside the wellness center, getting completely confidential intensive drug addiction treatment that will keep you safe as your body detoxifies and recovers from the chemical changes occurring in your brain. An acute detox program usually involves medication, with dual diagnosis care and therapy, and doctors and nurses available to you 24/7 in case of medical emergency.
Sub Acute Detox
Sub-acute detox is a type of lower-level detox plan for those with mild addictions, used for those entering inpatient rehab and outpatient rehab drug or alcohol programs. You will not have the same intensive level of medical care and may not be required to stay within the walls of the detox center as you would in an acute detox plan. Sub-acute detox is customized to you, so you are not given prescriptions and treatment plans for drug and alcohol addiction that you do not need.
